For families · An offer of company

Our volunteers are a quiet gift.

Hospice volunteers are trained, screened, and matched to your household with care. They are not staff and not strangers — they are people who chose, freely, to spend a few hours a week with someone they have not yet met. There is no cost. You can use as much or as little as feels right.

·What they do

For the patient

  • Sit, talk, or be quiet together.
  • Read aloud — books, scripture, the newspaper, letters.
  • Play music, watch a game, do a puzzle.
  • Record a life story or a letter to grandchildren.
  • Walk in the yard or to the porch.

For the caregiver

  • A few hours of respite so you can rest.
  • Errands — pharmacy, groceries, the post office.
  • Light help around the house if welcome.
  • A drive to a medical appointment.
  • Someone to share a cup of coffee with.

·What they don't do

If something feels off, tell the volunteer coordinator. The match can be changed. Your comfort is the point.

A note for the family

It is okay to say yes. It is okay to say no.

Some families want a volunteer every week from the first day. Some never feel they need one. Some change their mind halfway through. All of these are fine. The offer stands the whole time you are with us.

"Volunteers are required by Medicare for a reason. Hospice was started by them."
